Effects of Psychotropic Drugs on the Developing Brain (ePOD)
ePOD is a research project focusing on the effects of drugs on the brain under development. Within the current ePOD project we are investigating the effects of methylphenidate on the developing brain. Methylphenidate, better known as Ritalin, is a drug that is mainly used in the Netherlands to treat Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). People with ADHD often have difficulty concentrating and are easily distracted. They can also exhibit impulsive behavior (doing things without thinking about it) and often feel restless (hyperactivity). Methylphenidate is very effective in treating adolescents and adults with ADHD. However, little is known about the effects of methylphenidate on brain development and it is therefore of great importance that this research is carried out.
